Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the governments of Assam and West Bengal should work in coordination to protect and preserve Madhupur Satra, a historic Vaishnavite institution in Cooch Behar closely linked to the legacy of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati on the sidelines of programmes organised for Zubeen Divas, Sarma said the Assam government would approach the West Bengal government for cooperation in conserving the heritage site.
The Chief Minister stated that Assam would request additional land for the development and expansion of the satra. He said that if land is made available, the government plans to undertake a major development project at the site.
“If the West Bengal government provides land, we can develop Madhupur Satra on a much larger scale. Even if additional land is not available, we will make every effort to develop and protect the site using the existing land,” Sarma said.
Highlighting the importance of preserving Assam’s spiritual and cultural heritage, the Chief Minister referred to the successful development of Batradava Than, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev in Nagaon district, and said similar initiatives could be implemented at Madhupur Satra.
According to Sarma, the primary objective is to safeguard the legacy of Srimanta Sankardev and ensure that future generations remain connected to the historical and religious significance of the site.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister participated in a blood donation camp organized at the BJP headquarters in Basistha, Guwahati, as part of the observance of the first death anniversary of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
