Assam govt, Walmart Vriddhi sign MoU to boost MSMEs; 1 lakh enterprises targeted by 2028

The Government of Assam has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Walmart Vriddhi, through its program partner Ideas to Impact Foundation, to accelerate growth and digital empowerment of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the state. The pact was formalised with the Department of Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprises.

The partnership aligns with Walmart Vriddhi’s national goal of empowering an additional 100,000 MSMEs in India by 2028. Under the programme, Assam-based MSMEs will receive free training, mentoring and business tools to modernise operations, scale up and participate in eCommerce, including on platforms such as Flipkart. The state government will support outreach through District Industries Centres to strengthen the MSME ecosystem. The initiative will focus on key sectors including bamboo, cane, handloom and food processing, with initial rollout in Kamrup, Sonitpur, Cachar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Jorhat districts.

“MSMEs are a crucial pillar of India’s economy,” said M.N. Dahal, IAS, Commissioner of Industries and Commerce, adding that the collaboration will expand market access and build entrepreneurial capacity. Jason Fremstad, Senior Vice President, Supplier Development, Sourcing, Walmart International, said the programme will help local enterprises scale and compete in the digital economy. Launched in 2019, Walmart Vriddhi has trained over 70,000 MSMEs nationwide. Interested enterprises can register through the official Walmart Vriddhi portals.
