Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday highlighted significant improvements in the state’s law-and-order situation, citing a sharp decline in crime rates and notable gains in chargesheet and conviction rates over the past few years.
Sharing official data on social media platform X, the Chief Minister stated that the crime rate in Assam fell from 379 cases per lakh population in 2021 to 121.5 cases per lakh population in 2025, reflecting a decline of nearly 68 per cent.
The data also showed substantial progress in investigation and prosecution. The chargesheet rate increased from 48.8 per cent to 87.66 per cent during the period, indicating a higher proportion of cases being taken to court.
According to the figures released by the Chief Minister, the conviction rate rose from 5.5 per cent in 2020 to 30.88 per cent in 2026. The 2026 data covers the period up to September.
Highlighting the trend, Sarma said investigations were becoming faster, conviction rates were improving and crime was steadily declining across the state. He described the figures as evidence of the government’s efforts to strengthen crime control, improve accountability and enhance the efficiency of the criminal justice system.
The statistics were shared as part of the Chief Minister’s assessment of Assam’s overall law-and-order performance.
