The announcement by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that a direct non-stop flight between New Delhi and Jorhat will start operations in mid-September 2025 will significantly improve Assamese regional air connectivity. The statement was made on X on his official Twitter after a high-level meeting with IndiGo Airlines’ executives in New Delhi. “It was a pleasure to meet with IndiGo leadership in New Delhi to talk about their plan to increase air connectivity in Assam,” Sarma wrote.
“Happy to announce that, as of mid-September 2025, IndiGo will operate a nonstop flight between Delhi and Jorhat.” Enhancing general intra-state and inter-state aviation routes was another main topic of discussion. CM Sarma disclosed a number of impending additions to the airline’s itinerary: 1) To improve morning connectivity between the two main Assamese cities, the Delhi–Dibrugarh flight would be redesigned to include a stopover at Guwahati. 2) In response to a long-standing request from Barak Valley commuters, a new early morning Guwahati–Silchar service would be launched. 3) The Winter 2025–2026 flying schedule would include the opening of a new Guwahati–Navi Mumbai route.
Additionally, IndiGo plans to assess planned flights from North Lakhimpur’s Lilabari Airport, signaling a possible extension of connectivity in upper Assam. “A major step toward bolstering Assam’s air network has been taken with these developments. I value IndiGo’s quick and encouraging response, and I’m looking forward to additional joint ventures,” Sarma continued. In line with the state government’s goal to integrate isolated areas through improved connectivity and support economic and tourism opportunities, the extension represents a turning point in Assam’s infrastructure development.
