Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi paid a day-long visit to Manipur to assess the current security landscape and the operational readiness of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles stationed in the state, as per Army sources. The visit holds particular importance given the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur since May 2023, despite several efforts by the central and state governments to restore normalcy.
An Army spokesperson stated that the visit reaffirmed the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to ensuring peace and supporting development in the region. During the visit, General Dwivedi received a detailed briefing on the ground situation and the measures in place to maintain stability. He reviewed troop preparedness and praised their professionalism, resilience, and dedication while working in difficult conditions.
The Army Chief also met with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to discuss security and development issues. The discussion underscored strong collaboration between the civil administration and armed forces. Earlier this month, senior Army officials, including Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari, Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, and Maj Gen Ravroop Singh, briefed the Governor on Manipur’s security and the broader northeast region.
