Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India, accusing the constitutional body of sacrificing its independence and demanding the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Addressing reporters, Gogoi alleged that the election watchdog had lost its constitutional authority and was operating under the direct influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Asserting that the institution had been systematically hollowed out, Gogoi announced that the opposition INDIA bloc plans to organize a mock Parliament session on October 28 to highlight democratic concerns, while continuing its nationwide ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ public rallies. Responding to recent political remarks by the Prime Minister targeting Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the Assam MP remarked that Narendra Modi’s persistent focus on Gandhi demonstrated an obsessive preoccupation with opposition leadership, while critical national issues—including student welfare, middle-class financial distress, ongoing violence in Manipur, and severe drought conditions across multiple regions—remained neglected by the central government. In addition to his critique of central authorities, Gogoi raised grave concerns regarding state governance in Assam following his visit to Zubeen Kshetra to pay homage. He sharply criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration over its handling of the investigation into the death of beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg. Pointing out that despite explicit statements made by the Chief Minister inside the Legislative Assembly alleging that Garg had been murdered, the Special Investigation Team formed to probe the incident has repeatedly failed to present complete facts, conclusive evidence, or solid charges before the court. Expressing deep public frustration over key suspects systematically obtaining bail, Gogoi openly questioned the fundamental intentions behind the investigation, alleging that public apprehension is growing that the SIT was established not to secure justice for the late artist, but rather to shield influential individuals linked to his mysterious death, thereby exposing serious operational failures in the state’s judicial mechanism.
