As the election dates draw closer, the political atmosphere in Nagaon has intensified. Alongside the peak of the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election campaign, a series of attacks, counter-attacks, and tense situations have erupted among political parties.
Addressing an election rally at Borbori in Laharighat, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal made several controversial and explosive remarks targeting Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Pijush Hazarika, and BJP candidate Debashish Sharma. Meanwhile, in Rupohihat, the situation turned volatile as a group of people staged a protest by showing black flags to a Congress election procession.
Speaking at the Laharighat rally, AIUDF President Badruddin Ajmal issued a stern warning to the Chief Minister, saying, “I will gouge out Himanta Biswa Sarma’s eyes so that he cannot see Miya people anymore.” Ajmal further claimed that the Chief Minister and Minister Pijush Hazarika would have to “go to Bangladesh” in the future. Attacking Nagaon’s BJP candidate Debashish Sharma, he said that Sharma would be sent to jail within four months and would only be forgiven if he recites the ‘Kalma’.
Claiming his influence in the constituency, Ajmal roared, “These doctors (referring to the CM) are nothing—Ajmal is the real factor.” Additionally, mentioning Elias Ansari, Ajmal said he spent ₹50 lakh to educate and bring him into politics, and he would be given an AIUDF ticket in the upcoming elections.
On the other hand, extreme tension prevailed during the Congress campaign in Nagaon’s Rupohihat. As the Congress election procession reached Hatipara in Rupohihat, a group of local residents blocked the rally and staged a strong protest. The protesters displayed black flags in front of Congress leaders and shouted slogans such as “Congress Go Back,” “Gaurav Gogoi Go Back,” “Rakibul Hussain Go Back,” and “Ripun Bora Go Back.”
