Tension flared in Assam’s Morigaon district on Tuesday after a confrontation broke out between BJP and Congress workers at Garoimari, reportedly following protests against Congress MLA Asif Nazar.
According to reports, BJP workers allegedly stopped Nazar’s vehicle and raised “Go Back Asif Nazar” slogans while he was passing through the area. The situation soon escalated into a scuffle between workers of the BJP and Congress.
Police intervened to prevent the situation from worsening. The Morigaon Senior Superintendent of Police later brought the situation under control and escorted Nazar away from the spot.
The incident comes a day after violence was reported during Congress campaigning in Samaguri ahead of the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election.
On Monday, a Congress campaign convoy carrying Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, and other party leaders was allegedly attacked with stones while travelling to an election meeting in Samaguri.
While Congress accused BJP supporters of being behind the attack, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed the incident was the result of infighting between rival factions within the Congress.
Sarma had urged the Congress leadership to resolve its internal disputes and stressed that political rivalries should not spill onto the streets or disrupt public order.
