For the people of the state’s flood-affected areas, a delegation from Guwahati University met Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today and handed over a contribution of Rs 25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
This donation is part of the various relief and support measures undertaken by the university during the floods. Led by Guwahati University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta the delegation met the Chief Minister at Lok Bhavan in Dispur and handed over the cheque.
The Rs 25 lakh fund was collected through voluntary contributions of one day’s salary by teachers along with donations from non-teaching staff, officers and employees of the university.
It may be noted that during the flood period, under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Guwahati University had immediately taken several initiatives to stand by the flood-affected people. The university sent relief materials to 500 flood-affected families in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts and also dispatched 5,000 educational kits and other essential items for students in the affected areas.
During the meeting, the university delegation also apprised the Chief Minister of various steps taken by the university for flood relief and for the preservation of cultural heritage. They specifically informed him about the ongoing efforts to rescue and preserve the valuable Sanchipat manuscripts of Sri Sri Gajala Satra which was affected by the floods.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta said, _“Guwahati University is an institution deeply connected with the land and people of Assam. Standing by society during times of crisis is our responsibility.”
The delegation also included GU Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma, Academic Registrar Prof. Rajeev Sandigai President of GU Teachers’ Association Prof. Dipen Bezbaruah and General Secretary Dr. Samir Sarkar .
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma appreciated the collective humanitarian initiatives undertaken by the Guwahati University fraternity and thanked the university for standing by the people of Assam during these difficult times.
During the meeting, the delegation also informed the Chief Minister about the preparations being made by the university for the upcoming visit of the Vice President of India to Guwahati University. After being briefed on the arrangements, the Chief Minister assured all necessary support for the successful conduct of the Vice President’s visit.
