As flood situation in various parts of the state is turning serious, various kinds of news are also spreading about Kaziranga National Park. But those reports do not match the ground reality. The Forest Department has clarified that there is currently no flood situation in Kaziranga and the overall condition of the park is normal.
According to the Forest Department, due to heavy rainfall and the rise in water levels of the Brahmaputra as well as rivers in the Karbi Anglong hills, only four low-lying forest camps in Agoratoli, Kohora, Bagori and Burapahar ranges have witnessed slight waterlogging. There is no flood situation in other parts of the park.
Divisional Forest Officer of Kaziranga, Arun Vignesh, said that water entering four forest camps cannot be termed a full-fledged flood situation. The Forest Department is keeping a close watch on the situation, but there is no reason for concern at the moment.
The department assesses the situation every six hours. If water levels rise abnormally or the situation deteriorates, updated information will be made public immediately.
The Forest Department further stated that a flood situation is considered concerning only when 25 to 40 or more forest camps are inundated and 40% to 50% of the park area goes under water. When 70% to 90% of the area is flooded, it is declared a severe flood situation.
Meanwhile, keeping potential scenarios in mind, the Forest Department has strengthened precautionary measures. Forest staff are closely monitoring wildlife movement. Arrangements are also in place to ensure safe passage of wildlife across NH-715 towards the Karbi Anglong hills if needed.
The 108 artificial highlands inside the park have also been kept fully ready so that wildlife can take shelter there if water levels rise.
The Forest Department also stated that seasonal floods are an integral part of Kaziranga’s natural ecosystem. This floodwater helps remove silt from water bodies and wetlands, improves water quality, and plays a crucial role in conserving the park’s biodiversity.
