Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday inspected the Water Resources Department’s flood and erosion control project at Nagaghuli Ghat in Dibrugarh as part of his official district tour. During the visit, he reviewed the progress of ongoing flood protection measures and riverbank erosion control works, while assessing the safety, maintenance, and long-term sustainability of the infrastructure with senior department officials.
The Governor highlighted the Assam Government’s continued efforts to strengthen flood management and minimise the impact of annual monsoon-related flooding and riverbank erosion across the state. He appreciated the commitment of engineers and officials working to protect vulnerable riverside communities through improved infrastructure and preventive measures.
Emphasising the need for sustainable development, Governor Acharya proposed several initiatives to enhance the project area’s long-term value. He recommended large-scale tree plantation along embankments to improve environmental sustainability and help strengthen erosion control. He also suggested developing modern tourism facilities at Nagaghuli Ghat to transform the site into a local attraction, creating new livelihood opportunities and generating employment for local youth through tourism and related economic activities.
The Governor said that integrating environmental conservation with infrastructure development would not only improve flood resilience but also contribute to the region’s economic growth and sustainable development, benefiting both local communities and future generations.
