The Assam government has introduced strict measures to protect the upcoming semiconductor manufacturing facility at Jagiroad by restricting the establishment of polluting industries within a 15-kilometre radius of the project site.
The decision follows concerns that environmental pollution could affect the performance of the semiconductor plant, one of the State’s most ambitious industrial projects. The facility, located at Ratan Tata Electronic City in Jagiroad, is expected to begin production during the current financial year.
According to officials, semiconductor manufacturing requires highly controlled conditions. Microscopic particles such as dust, soot, and heavy metal contaminants, as well as vibrations and airborne molecular contamination from nearby industrial activities, can damage sensitive components and reduce production efficiency.
To address these concerns, the State government has issued a notification prohibiting the establishment of cement plants and other highly polluting industries within the designated zone. The move is in line with an earlier Cabinet decision aimed at creating a clean and stable environment for advanced electronics manufacturing.
Industry experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that environmental safeguards are essential for maintaining global standards in semiconductor production. The restrictions are expected to strengthen investor confidence and support the long-term success of the Jagiroad project, which is viewed as a major step in Assam’s industrial and technological development.
