Residents Fear Displacement as Erosion Intensifies Along Brahmaputra

Fresh large-scale erosion along the Brahmaputra and Desang rivers has raised concerns among residents of Ligiribari Mising Gaon and several neighboring villages in Assam’s Desangmukh region. With the monsoon season underway and river levels expected to rise further, villagers fear that significant portions of the area could be washed away, leading to permanent displacement.

Although erosion protection work, including the installation of geo-bags, was carried out last year, residents say the measures have proven insufficient. Local community leaders and activists have called for a comprehensive and permanent erosion-control project covering the stretch from Desangmukh to Dikhowmukh to safeguard vulnerable villages such as Ligiribari, Aphala, Majorbari, Saraipora, Garbhaga, and Alichiga.

Residents also warned that important cultural and religious landmarks, including the historic Ramkha Peeth Dewalay and Ajan Peer Dargah, could be threatened if erosion continues unchecked. Community representatives allege that temporary protection measures have failed to address the root causes of the problem and have urged authorities to adopt long-term solutions.

Meanwhile, Sivasagar town continues to struggle with flash flooding following heavy rainfall. Locals blame poor drainage planning, encroachment on natural water reservoirs, and inadequate maintenance of drainage systems for worsening conditions. Residents are now urging authorities to take immediate action to address both the erosion crisis and recurring urban flooding before the situation deteriorates further.
