Empowering Women, Restoring Nature: Assam Mobilizes Lakhs for Massive Afforestation Drive

In a massive push towards ecological preservation, the Assam government has announced an ambitious initiative to plant one crore saplings across the state on World Environment Day, June 5. This monumental green drive will see the active participation of over 35 lakh women Self-Help Group (SHG) members, underscoring the state’s focus on community-led conservation and women empowerment.

Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora highlighted that this campaign reflects Assam’s deep dedication to maintaining ecological balance. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state has consistently prioritized sustainable development through afforestation, forest reclamation, and the integration of modern technology in conservation.

To ensure the flawless execution of the drive, Minister Bora chaired a high-level review meeting in Guwahati with senior officials from the Panchayat and Rural Development Department, alongside representatives from the Environment and Forest Department. Bora directed officials to ensure smooth coordination, robust monitoring, and widespread public involvement.

The meeting, which also reviewed ongoing livelihood programmes like the Lakhpati Baideo scheme, saw the presence of Additional Chief Secretary B. Kalyan Chakravarthy and Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, among other top officials. This large-scale campaign is set to become one of Assam’s most significant environmental milestones, beautifully merging grassroots community action with structured government oversight to drastically strengthen the state’s green cover.
