Kartikeya Vajpai – author, lawyer, and speaker – launched his widely discussed novel The Unbecoming: Let Life Reveal Its Purpose at the Guwahati Press Club on Wednesday, marking the book’s first Northeast India launch. The event saw the presence of journalists, students, academicians, and local literary figures.
Published by Penguin Random House India, The Unbecoming offers a contemporary exploration of identity, self-awareness, purpose, and modern life’s emotional intricacies. The Guwahati launch initiates the book’s engagement with the Northeast, positioning the region as a vital hub for conversations on literature, youth, and introspection. The novel features forewords by the Dalai Lama and Swami Sarvapriyananda, and follows Siddharth, a celebrated cricketer, and his mentor Ajay as they confront questions of identity, expectation, and inner transformation.
The gathering evolved beyond a typical book launch into a reflective dialogue on ambition, fear, validation, and the search for meaning in a high-pressure world. Addressing the audience, Mr. Vajpai said, “Much of our lives is spent trying to become something shaped by society, ambition, or fear, without ever questioning whether those identities truly belong to us. The Unbecoming invites us to pause and reflect on that deeper inquiry.” He added that stories help individuals recognise difficult truths with honesty and without judgment.
Following the formal launch, Mr. Vajpai engaged in an interactive discussion with Khagen Kalita, eminent journalist and President of the Guwahati Press Club. Kalita remarked, “At a time when public discourse is driven by speed and superficiality, books like The Unbecoming create space for introspection. Vajpai’s reflections on identity and inner awareness resonate strongly with younger generations navigating immense pressures.”
Vajpai observed that the Northeast’s intellectual and cultural sensitivity makes it deeply receptive to meaningful literary dialogue. He also interacted with the audience on emotional resilience, purpose, detachment, and the pressures facing today’s youth. Attendees from the literary and media fraternity described the session as thoughtful, refreshing, and highly relevant amid growing concerns over mental well-being and the emotional costs of relentless achievement.
The programme concluded with an engaging audience Q&A and a book-signing session. As part of his Northeast visit, Vajpai has also conducted interactive sessions with students across Guwahati, including a major youth interaction hosted by JCI India Zone 25 and a special session at Modern English School, Kahilipara. He has additionally held discussions with students from various universities on purpose, identity, emotional well-being, and navigating life beyond conventional ideas of success.
