All India Institute of Medical Sciences Guwahati has denied claims of a mass food poisoning incident on its campus after a social media post alleged that several students fell ill after eating food served at the institute’s mess facility. The controversy began after a post circulated widely on social media platform X claimed that more than 50 students at the institute had suffered from food poisoning due to allegedly unhygienic food served inside the campus mess. The post quickly spread online and triggered concern among students, parents, and social media users over food safety conditions at the institute. However, the institute administration has rejected the claims and clarified that, as of now, only one suspected case of food-related illness has been reported. In an official statement issued by the institute, the administration said there was no evidence to support the allegation of a large-scale food poisoning incident on the campus. The institute described the viral claims as unverified and said the reports circulating online did not reflect the actual situation. The administration stated that student health and safety remain a top priority and said the matter was being treated seriously despite the limited number of reported cases.
According to the statement, only one individual was identified with suspected food-related illness and necessary medical attention was immediately provided to the person. Officials said the condition of the affected individual was being monitored and the situation remained under review. The institute also informed that an enquiry committee has been formed to examine the matter in detail. Authorities said the committee would look into all aspects related to food preparation, hygiene standards, and mess operations to determine whether there was any lapse. Officials said preliminary findings so far do not indicate any signs of a mass outbreak as claimed in the viral social media posts. The statement further said that many of the claims being shared online appeared to be based on rumours and unverified information. The institute urged people not to spread misinformation that could create unnecessary panic among students and their families. Even though the institute denied the allegations of mass food poisoning, officials said several precautionary and corrective steps had already been initiated as part of the internal review process.
According to the administration, inspections of kitchen and food preparation areas have been carried out following the complaint. Hygiene measures inside the mess facilities are also being reviewed and reinforced to ensure proper food handling and cleanliness standards are maintained. The institute said it is also coordinating with concerned authorities and food safety officials to ensure that all required safety norms are being followed properly within the campus food facilities. Sources said that food hygiene and hostel mess conditions are often sensitive issues in large educational and medical institutions where hundreds of students depend on common dining facilities every day. Because of this, even isolated health complaints can quickly create concern among students and parents, especially when information spreads rapidly through social media platforms.
