In a significant addition to Assam’s biodiversity, researchers have discovered a rare species of fish from the deep underground waters of Goralpara district. The discovery has been described as unique due to the fish’s distinct physical characteristics and habitat. The research was conducted jointly by scientists from Gauhati University, Cotton University, and Manipur University. According to the researchers, the fish does not inhabit regular rivers or ponds but survives in underground water systems, making it highly unusual.
The newly discovered species lacks eyesight and pigmentation, features commonly associated with organisms adapted to dark, subterranean environments. Scientists noted that such species evolve over time to survive in complete darkness, leading to the loss of vision and coloration. The research findings have been published in an international scientific journal, highlighting the global importance of the discovery. Experts believe that this finding opens new avenues for studying underground ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the research team and termed the discovery a proud moment for Assam. He appreciated the contribution of the scientists in bringing global recognition to the state’s natural heritage. Researchers further stated that the discovery underscores the need to protect fragile underground ecosystems, which remain largely unexplored. The finding is expected to contribute significantly to future scientific research and conservation efforts.
