Reliance Infra To Recover $2.44 billion In Unpaid Power Dues From Delhi Consumers

Reliance Infrastructure announced on Friday, August 8, 2025, that its power distribution companies in New Delhi will recover ₹21,413 crore (approximately $2.44 billion) in outstanding dues, following a recent Supreme Court verdict that upheld their claims. These dues are a result of historical tariff gaps, where regulator-approved electricity prices did not fully cover the cost of supply. The recovery will take place over four years and is expected to lead to higher power tariffs for consumers. Reliance Infra is part of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group.

The Supreme Court ruling, issued on Wednesday, directed electricity regulators nationwide to settle deferred cost recoveries and unpaid dues owed to distribution companies. The court also mandated state regulators to conduct thorough audits and submit structured recovery plans.

In New Delhi, three power distributors — including a Tata Power subsidiary — had accumulated dues totaling ₹27,200 crore by March 2024, as noted in the court’s findings. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) will supervise the implementation of the recovery plan, which is expected to lead to increased electricity bills for Delhi consumers over the next few years.
