Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched the statewide distribution of application forms for the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Scheme and Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Babu Scheme at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. The initiative aims to provide financial assistance to students and ensure greater access to higher education across the state.
During the programme, the Chief Minister also disbursed ₹15.86 crore through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to 793 flood-affected schools in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. In addition, financial assistance of over ₹4.26 crore was released from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for 21,025 students in Sivasagar and Charaideo to help them purchase educational materials damaged during the recent floods.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sarma announced that the Nijut Babu Scheme, which benefited 50,000 male students last year, will be expanded to cover an additional 70,000 students this year, taking the total number of beneficiaries to 1.20 lakh. He also said that girl students enrolled in polytechnic courses and those studying in the seventh semester of integrated postgraduate programmes will now be eligible for financial assistance under the Nijut Moina Scheme.
The Assam Government said the expanded initiatives reaffirm its commitment to supporting students, strengthening educational opportunities and helping institutions recover from the impact of natural disasters.
