Tragedy struck Lakhipur village in Goalpara district on Sunday night as two elderly individuals, Ilawati Rabha (56) and Gunj Rabha (70), lost their lives in a devastating wild elephant attack. The tusker, believed to be in search of food, entered the village and fatally trampled the victims.
Ilawati Rabha, a resident of Lakhipur, and Gunj Rabha, originally from Meghalaya, had both made their homes in the village. The incident occurred amidst growing concerns over human-wildlife conflicts in Assam, where elephants increasingly encroach into populated areas.
Local authorities responded promptly, retrieving the bodies for post-mortem examination. The community also faced a close call as another family narrowly avoided harm when the elephant attempted to break into their home. Vigilant efforts from locals eventually led to the elephant leaving the village after a tense standoff.
