Samsung has embarked on an innovative journey by introducing the first-ever design thinking and training workshop in select schools across India. This groundbreaking initiative, a part of Samsung’s renowned ‘Solve for Tomorrow’ program, is designed to cultivate essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity among students through the Human-Centered Design Thinking framework.
The workshops aim to integrate design thinking education into the academic curriculum, fostering a culture of innovation among the youth. Tailored specifically for India, these workshops encourage students over the age of 14 to tackle societal challenges through innovative solutions.
Led by Samsung Southwest Asia’s Corporate Vice President, SP Chun, the workshops are part of Samsung’s vision to empower the next generation and create an ecosystem of innovation in the country. Chun emphasizes the importance of nurturing innovation from a young age, stating, “Through these offline sessions, school students will get a unique opportunity to question basics, identify real-world issues, and propose tech-based solutions.”
The one-day workshop introduces students to the basic concepts and five-step process of design thinking:
Empathy: Students engage in role-play and interviews to empathize with various user types affected by real-world problems.
Define: Through guided discussions, students define core issues using tools like the Problem Tree.
Ideate: Encouraging creativity, students brainstorm solutions before refining them through group collaboration.
Prototype: Students translate their solutions into tangible storyboards for feedback and enhancement.
Test: Solutions are tested based on user experience, with improvements made accordingly.
The ‘Solve for Tomorrow’ initiative, operational in 63 countries, aims to ignite passion for problem-solving among young minds. In its 2024 edition, students aged 14-17 can participate individually or in teams, submitting ideas under the theme of “Community & Inclusion.”
Participants stand a chance to win grants for prototype development, Samsung Galaxy Tabs, and a seed grant of INR 25 Lakh for prototype advancement. Applications are open until May 31, 2024, at www.samsung.com/in/solvefortomorrow, providing a platform for young innovators to make a tangible impact on society.
