On Thursday, Rakibul Hussain, a Member of Parliament representing the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency and a senior leader of the Congress party, advocated for naming the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge over the Brahmaputra River after the iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. He emphasized Garg’s significant contributions to Assamese music and identity, highlighting him as one of the foremost artists who has elevated Assamese culture to both national and international recognition. Hussain expressed his intention to discuss this proposal with the relevant Union Minister. This initiative follows a previous demand made on Wednesday by Gaurav Gogoi, the MP for Jorhat and President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, who called for Zubeen Garg to be awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, during the Winter Session of Parliament.
