On the occasion of World Meningitis Day, health authorities and pediatric experts in Guwahati are amplifying efforts to raise awareness about the importance of meningitis vaccination, which is critical for preventing this serious infection. With over 2.5 million cases reported globally each year, meningitis represents a significant health crisis, particularly among children under five, who account for nearly 70% of fatalities.
Dr. Rashna Dass Hazarika, Professor of Pediatrics at PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital, emphasizes the urgency of vaccination, stating, “Meningitis is a fast-moving infection that can have life-altering consequences.” The Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommends a two-dose meningococcal vaccine schedule for children aged 9 to 23 months, with a single dose for those over two years at increased risk.
In Guwahati, local healthcare providers and pharmacies are ramping up vaccination initiatives and educational campaigns to reach parents. The focus on proactive health measures aligns with the World Health Organization’s goal of eliminating bacterial meningitis epidemics by 2030. As communities rally together to protect their children, the drive for vaccination could significantly reduce the incidence and mortality of this preventable disease, fostering a healthier future for all.
