Siliguri, 09 May (Retd.). Residents of Siliguri are bracing themselves for a possible drinking water crisis in the next two weeks. Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has announced the launch of a dedicated helpline number to address the concerns of the city.
According to reports, Mayor Gautam Deb addressed the media in this regard in a press conference held at the SMC premises on Thursday. The corporation is preparing to start dam and river purification activities on Teesta River from this Friday. As a result, the supply of drinking water from Teesta River will remain disrupted for an estimated period of 15 days.
During this period, SMC will completely depend on the source of water from Mahananda River to distribute it to various wards of Siliguri. As a result, there is a possibility of widespread shortage of water supply in the city.
In an effort to deal with the situation, the corporation has decided to send 21 water tanks to different wards. Additionally, a stock of one lakh water sachets has been purchased; each town will receive 3000 sachets. The distribution of water pouches will be managed by SMC staff.
Besides this, a helpline number has also been set up for emergency assistance. Residents can contact for assistance or information by dialing 7557035194.
