Glenmark Foundation’s boat clinic: A lifeline for maternal and child health in Assam’s remote regions

To uplift healthcare in Assam’s most isolated areas, Glenmark Foundation has joined forces with the Centre for North East Studies & Policy Research (C-NES) and the Darrang District Administration to launch an ambitious boat clinic program. This innovative initiative is set to make waves in maternal and child health by reaching flood-prone riverine communities with essential medical services.

The boat clinic, designed to navigate the challenges of seasonal flooding and geographical isolation, will provide a mobile health unit equipped with a laboratory and pharmacy. The clinic aims to deliver crucial services such as immunizations, prenatal care, and health education directly to the doorstep of those in need. A team of dedicated healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, lab technicians, and pharmacists, will ensure that these services reach even the most remote locations.

Nayana Parasher, DPM NHM Darrang, hailed the program as a vital step in addressing healthcare gaps, while District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey celebrated its potential to transform health access in remote river islands.Since 2008, C-NES has expanded its reach across 14 districts with similar initiatives. With Darrang becoming the 15th, Sanjoy Hazarika, Founder of C-NES, expressed optimism about the program’s impact on marginalized communities. Glenmark’s Cheryl Pinto, Executive Director – Corporate Services, praised the collaborative effort, stating, “The Boat Clinic represents our commitment to innovative, accessible healthcare solutions.”
