Elephant calf rescued by Assam forest officers, trapped in tea garden

An elephant youngster, estimated to be five to six months old, became stuck in a pit on section 28 of the Sonajuli Dholakua tea estate in Rangapara, Assam. The incident occurred early on November 12th, when a herd of approximately 50 elephants was traveling through the estate on their normal search for food. According to the witness, after numerous attempts, the calf’s mother was unable to extricate her young one from the small pit.

The sight of the struggling calf and its frightened mother grabbed the estate workers’ attention, forcing them to act immediately. Forest officials quickly came on the scene to take command of the rescue attempts, proposing numerous techniques to assure the calf’s safe recovery. Meanwhile, the herd’s presence on the land increased the urgency of the issue. The herd’s relocation from their woodland habitat into residential areas exemplifies the persistent issues of human-animal conflict in areas where animals struggles to obtain food despite declining forest cover.
