Bad weather has caused the Kaziranga Jeep Safari to be suspended since May 19

Starting on May 19, 2025, Jeep Safari will not be operating in Assam’s famous Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve till further notice. The Eastern Assam Wildlife Division’s Divisional Forest Officer formally declared the closure following persistently terrible weather and poor road conditions. The notification made clear that the decision was made with everyone’s welfare and public safety in mind. The news was also shared by the Assam Chief Minister’s Office on its platform X social media account, which raised severe worries about staff and visitor safety due to the unfavourable weather conditions.

The infrastructure of the park has been severely damaged by the state’s intense rains, rendering it unsuitable for tourist activities, particularly the popular jeep safaris. This occurs during a record-breaking year for tourism in Kaziranga National Park. In the fiscal year 2024–2025, the park received 4,06,564 visitors, including 17,693 foreign visitors, generating an astounding Rs 10.90 crore. According to Field Director Sonali Ghosh, this was four times as many visitors as the park had received in the previous ten years, demonstrating its growing appeal on a national and worldwide scale.

Due to its popularity, Kaziranga National Park, which is well-known for its biodiversity and sightings of one-horned rhinos, draws 4.5% of tourists from abroad. Dignitaries such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck have visited the park. The New York Times also mentions it as a top travel destination. Eco-tourism is being promoted by the Assam government.
