Assam Police suspended heavy traffic on NH-27 due to rain

The movement of heavy vehicles has been temporarily suspended by the Assam police on NH-27 between Jatinga and Harangajao in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. Until further orders, vehicles heading to and from Barak Valley are instructed to take the detour via Meghalaya (National Highway-6). According to a press release from the police, because to regular rainfall, soil subsidence, and current construction, large vehicles with 12 wheels or more and long trucks and trailers more than 24 feet are prohibited from operating.

“Due to frequent rainfalls, subsidence of land/road surface and on-going construction works, the plying of heavy commercial vehicles with 12 wheels or more including long trucks/trailers, (more than 24 feet in length) has been temporarily prohibited in between the stretch of Jatinga to Harangajao of the National Highway-27 within Dima Hasao district,” the Assam police stated in its press release. Regarding this, the police recommended that large trucks and trailers, as well as heavy vehicles with 12 wheels or more, that are traveling to and from Barak Valley use the detour via Meghalaya (National Highway-6) till they receive additional instructions.

A new restriction on heavy trucks along the Borkhola-Kalain Road, which is currently being built as part of the Asom Mala Project, was announced earlier this month by the Executive Engineer of PWRD, Borkhola & Katigorah Territorial Road Division. All vehicles on the Borkhola-Khambarbazar section of the route with a Gross Total Weight (GTW) greater than 15 metric tons (MT) are now subject to the prohibition. This action is a reaction to the continuing construction being regularly damaged by heavy loaded commercial vehicles, which seriously disturb pedestrian traffic and smaller cars. The prohibition will be in effect until further notice in order to address these problems and prioritize the interests of the general public.
