Assam floods have affected over 4.43 lakh people across 16 districts

More than 4.43 lakh people from 16 Assamese districts were still impacted by the floods, despite the fact that major rivers, such as the Brahmaputra, were moving downward. No fatalities from the flooding throughout the day were reported, however one person was reported missing in Kamrup (Metro). The current first wave of floods and landslides caused by torrential rains has killed 21 persons in the state thus far. 1,296 villages across the 54 revenue circles in 16 districts have been impacted by the floods, and 2,96,765 animals are currently being impacted by the current wave, while 16,558.59 hectares of crops remain submerged.

While 1,19,001 people received relief at distribution centers established in the impacted regions, over 40,313 displaced people are currently residing in 328 relief camps. In isolated locations throughout 18 districts of the state, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has predicted thunderstorms and lightning along with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph. This week, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made his second trip to the Barak Valley to assess the flood situation, which has left all three districts in the area—Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi—severely impacted.

Sarma has promised rehabilitation grants and repairs for damaged infrastructure before Durga Puja festivities. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has been severely affected by Brahmaputra and Kopili river water, with nearly 70% of its area inundated. The forest department and agencies have taken measures to protect animals, provide food, and prevent poaching. Patrols have increased, and elephants have been relocated to Burha Mayong hills.
