Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful auction of Pu’er Tea for the first time in its history, further strengthening its position in the specialty tea segment.
During Auction Sale No. 39, the specialty tea variety fetched an impressive price of ₹12,000 per kg. The tea was auctioned through broker J. Thomas & Co., while Assam Tea Traders emerged as the buyer.
The landmark sale marks another important chapter in GTAC’s growing recognition as a platform for premium and specialty teas.
Pu’er Tea is a unique post-fermented tea produced exclusively from the sun-dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis var. assamica plant. The tea is crafted using leaves that are withered, pan-fired and sun-dried, and is often compressed into cakes for aging.
Known for its distinctive character, Pu’er Tea matures slowly and naturally over several years or even decades. It begins with the bright and astringent qualities of green tea before developing into a rich, complex and naturally sweet brew with age.
