Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project at Chapar in Dhubri district, marking the largest single industrial investment in Assam’s history. With an estimated investment of ₹48,000 crore, the project is expected to significantly increase the state’s power generation capacity and reduce its dependence on electricity purchased from outside Assam. The project is expected to generate employment for nearly 25,000 people during the construction phase and create around 5,000 permanent jobs once operational. Sarma said the project would play an important role in Assam’s efforts toward greater energy self-reliance and provide a more reliable power supply to support industrial growth and investment. Assam’s current peak electricity demand is around 3,026 MW, while generation within the state stands at approximately 400 MW. With demand projected to reach 5,500 MW by 2030, the Chief Minister said additional large-scale power projects would be required in the coming years. The Chapar project is scheduled to begin operations in phases, with the first 800 MW expected by December 2030, followed by an expansion to 1,600 MW in 2031 and full 3,200 MW capacity by December 2032.
