A landslide in Guwahati’s Noonmati area claimed the lives of three members of a family on Tuesday morning, while their 19-year-old son survived after being rescued from the debris.
The incident occurred at around 8 am in Mathgharia, where a section of a hill collapsed following heavy rainfall and crashed onto the family’s house. The victims were trapped under the debris as they were sleeping.
Police identified the deceased as Nagen Rajbongshi, 44, his wife Sanu Rajbongshi, 38, and their 12-year-old daughter Meena Rajbongshi. Their son Biplab Rajbongshi, 19, was pulled out alive and is currently receiving medical treatment.
A senior police officer said the family was asleep when the landslide struck. Rescue and security teams from the district disaster management department reached the spot and recovered the bodies from the debris.
The bodies were subsequently sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination.
The landslide is believed to have been caused by continuous rainfall that began in Guwahati late Monday night. According to local residents, soil from the top of the hill collapsed and swept onto the house.
Residents said Nagen was a daily-wage labourer and the family had been residing in the area for several years.
At least two other major landslides have also been reported in Amsing and Athgaon. One person is reportedly dead in each incident, though the authorities are yet to confirm these casualties.
Meanwhile, several low-lying areas across Guwahati have been flooded due to persistent heavy rain.
