The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) has announced a local holiday in five districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region on August 27 following the sudden death of Bijit Gwra Narzary, Deputy Speaker of the Bodoland Territorial Council Legislative Assembly (BTCLA).
According to a notification issued by the BTC General Administration Department, the holiday will be observed in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri.
The order covers offices of departments under the administrative control of the BTC, including the offices of Deputy Commissioners and Sub-Divisional Officers (Civil) functioning within the BTC area.
Schools, colleges and examination centres, however, have been kept outside the scope of the holiday. Students and staff assigned to examination-related duties will continue their responsibilities. Personnel engaged in Census-related work have also been directed to carry out their assigned duties as scheduled.
As a mark of respect to the late deputy speaker, the BTC has further ordered that the National Flag be flown at half-mast on August 27 and 28.
The directive applies to government offices, educational institutions and other establishments where the National Flag is normally displayed.
The BTC administration said the local holiday and the two-day half-mast observance were being undertaken as a mark of respect following Narzary’s sudden demise.
