Dima Hasao Celebrates Official Recognition of Dimasa Language

The people of Dima Hasao celebrated the official recognition of the Dimasa language as a historic milestone at a programme held in Haflong on Tuesday. The event, titled ‘Graodima Khe Maan Yaophane Mel-Mjang’, marked the Assam Government’s notification recognising Dimasa for official use in Dima Hasao alongside English. The recognition, issued by the Home and Political Department, is being seen as an important step towards preserving and promoting the Dimasa language, literature and cultural heritage. The programme also honoured individuals who contributed to the long campaign for official recognition of the language. A new book, ‘Jengkhlongmander: Yaowaisainthi Beleb Lairimin-3’, was also released during the event. The celebration was attended by Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa, Haflong MLA Rupali Langthasa, DHAC Chairman Mohet Hojai, Dimasa Lairimdi Mel president and retired ACS Ramesh Thaosen, along with council members and other dignitaries. The recognition is expected to strengthen the use of Dimasa in official settings while encouraging greater efforts to preserve the community’s linguistic and cultural identity.
