The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Assam State Committee, staged protests at various workplaces across the state on Monday against what it described as the Central government’s “anti-worker and anti-farmer policies.” The protests were held in response to a nationwide call by central trade unions, employees’ federations and the joint farmers’ front for demonstrations, road blockades and workplace protests. In Assam, the AITUC opted to conduct the agitation at workplaces instead of organising larger public demonstrations, citing the state’s prevailing flood situation.
AITUC Assam State Committee general secretary Ramen Das said the nationwide programme was part of an agitation plan announced at a convention in Delhi on September 29, 2025. He also linked the August 10 protest to the Quit India Movement, launched on August 8, 1942, against British rule. The AITUC alleged that the Centre’s labour reforms have weakened workers’ rights. According to the organisation, 29 existing labour laws were repealed and replaced with four labour codes, which it claims could provide employers with greater flexibility at the expense of workers’ protections. The statewide protests reflect continuing opposition from trade unions and farmers’ organisations to the Centre’s labour and economic policies, with the AITUC calling for stronger protection of workers’ and farmers’ interests.
