Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has strongly condemned the detention of land rights activist, Pranab Doley, under the National Security Act (NSA).
The Assam government had on July 30 invoked Act against Doley, just a day after the district court granted him bail.
He had been arrested on July 12 in connection with protests against a proposed luxury hotel near the Kaziranga National Park.
“I strongly condemn the arrest of Pranab Doley under the NSA. A hotel project in Kaziranga cannot be treated as a matter of national security. Through the misuse of the NSA, this government is trying to take away the democratic rights of citizens,” Gogoi alleged in a statement.
“Anyone may agree or disagree with Pranab Doley and his colleagues, but the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to question,” he said.
“The government’s decision to invoke the NSA after the court granted him bail only proves that it wants society to remain silent. I hope the Supreme Court takes suo motu cognisance of the misuse of the NSA in the coming days,” the Congress leader said.
