Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a fresh flood situation across the state. As a result of this, rising waters of the Dikhou River have disrupted rail connectivity in the Simlaguri area of Sivasagar district. With water flowing over the railway tracks, Northeast Frontier Railway has suspended train services indefinitely on the Simlaguri–Namti Ali and Simlaguri–Selenghat sections.
According to railway authorities, the floodwaters of the Dikhou River have inundated the premises of Simlaguri Railway Station, the railway residential area, and the railway tracks. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of passengers and train operations.
Long-distance trains operating from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia have been diverted via the Rangiya–Rangapara route. Several local trains have been cancelled due to the flood situation, while the routes of a few others have been curtailed.
Steps are being taken to restore rail services as soon as possible. NFR stated that staff, equipment, essential materials and technical teams have been dispatched to the affected locations.
The situation is being closely monitored at a high level. According to Northeast Frontier Railway, the water level is still high at present, making it impossible to assess the actual damage to the tracks. Only after the water recedes will it be possible to determine the exact extent of the damage, and only then can a confirmed timeline for resuming train services be given.
