The thrilling journey of the world’s biggest sporting festival, the FIFA World Cup, finally came to an end. Spain defeated Argentina in the final to lift the World Cup trophy for the second time. The European side secured a nail-biting 1-0 win in extra time against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
No team could score during the regulation 90 minutes of the final held at MetLife Stadium. The match went into extra time. In the 106th minute, Ferran Torres scored with a perfect finish off a header from Nico Williams to give Spain a crucial lead. That solitary goal remained intact till the end.
Spain dominated possession from the very start of the match. While Rodri and Fabian Ruiz controlled the midfield, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Nico Williams launched wave after wave of attacks. Argentina were completely pinned back in the first half by Spain’s relentless pressure.
Argentina’s players failed to control the ball even once inside Spain’s penalty area in the first 45 minutes. The world champions couldn’t even manage a single shot on target.
Despite Spain’s continuous attacks, Emiliano Martinez produced an outstanding goalkeeping performance. He denied several clear chances from Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres and Nico Williams.
Forced to deal with Lisandro Martinez picking up a yellow card in the first half, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni had to bring on Nicolas Otamendi.
The pattern of the game didn’t change much in the second half either. Although Spain held most of the possession, the game remained goalless thanks to Emiliano Martinez’s solid performance.
Things got even tougher for Argentina when Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card and had to leave the field. Despite playing with 10 men, the team held on with an organized defense to take the game into extra time.
Emiliano Martinez made two more crucial saves in extra time. But in the 106th minute, Ferran Torres made no mistake, slotting home the cross from Nico Williams’ header to take Spain to the doorstep of the World Cup.
In the final minutes, Argentina, led by Messi, tried to equalize but couldn’t break down Spain’s disciplined defense. As a result, Spain sealed a 1-0 victory to lift the World Cup trophy for the second time.
