The Assam Forest Department will launch the Char-Chapori Greening Initiative, utilizing drone-based seed-ball technology to regenerate barren riverine sandbars (chars and chapori areas) along the Brahmaputra. This innovative project is designed to restore ecology and enhance biodiversity across vulnerable riverine floodplains.
Alongside this pilot project, the department aims to plant 1 crore saplings incorporating the “Brikshya Bandhu” and “Phalbari” schemes to boost overall green cover and promote indigenous fruit species.
“Forest Department of Assam is launching the Char-Chapori Greening Initiative to regenerate barren char ( sandbars ) and chapori areas along the Brahmaputra. Beginning with a pilot project using drone-based seed-ball technology, this initiative will pave the way for large scale ecological restoration, enhancing biodiversity and building a greener, more resilient Assam,” said Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.
He said the Forest Department has set a target to plant one crore saplings across the state ahead of Independence Day by involving students of Class 9 and above.
“We want to involve our students in this mega plantation drive. During the registration, the students will have to provide the name of one Job Card holder under the VB-G RAM-G Scheme. We have targeted to plant 1 crore saplings,” Mallabaruah said.
