Guwahati-based businessman Gautam Baruah was detained for celebrating his wife’s birthday on the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu. He was detained by city police on charges of obstructing traffic movement by holding a birthday celebration on the bridge. The incident gained widespread attention after a video of the celebration went viral on social media.
In the video circulated on social media, a private event was seen being held on the bridge with a red carpet laid out and decorations in place. According to allegations, a section of the public road was temporarily converted into a venue, causing disruption to vehicular movement.
After the video and photographs of the incident were widely circulated on social media, many people raised questions about the use of a public road for a private function.
Following the social media reactions and circulation of the video, Bharalumukh Police launched an investigation into the incident. After the probe, police detained Gautam Baruah.
Police have registered Case No. 79 of 2026 regarding the incident. The case has been filed under Sections 125, 285 and 270 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police have also seized two vehicles suspected to be involved in the incident, bearing registration numbers AS 01 GH 0003 and AS 01 GK 0772.
According to police sources, they are also examining whether vehicles were parked during the event and caused obstruction to traffic movement. Police are interrogating the detained businessman and further investigation into the incident is underway.
