Assam approves second emergency landing facility on NH-27 in Nalbari

The Nalbari district administration has approved the construction of a 5-kilometre Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on National Highway-27, making it the second such facility in Assam aimed at strengthening strategic and emergency infrastructure in the Northeast region. Officials said the proposed facility will be developed on a stretch of the highway between Tihu and Madhapur. Once completed, the corridor will function as an auxiliary runway capable of handling military transport aircraft as well as civilian commercial flights during emergency situations.

According to officials associated with the project, the emergency landing strip is being planned as part of a broader effort to improve India’s strategic preparedness and logistical capabilities in the Northeast. The facility is expected to play an important role during national security operations, disaster response missions and emergency situations requiring the rapid movement of personnel, medical teams, relief materials and defence equipment. Authorities said the infrastructure will be built according to military operational standards and will include reinforced sections designed to support heavy aircraft operations. The project is also expected to improve emergency connectivity in the region during floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters that often affect the northeastern states.

Officials stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working closely with local authorities for the implementation of the project. As part of the safety requirements, zoning regulations and no-construction zones will be maintained along the approach paths of the runway to ensure safe aircraft movement and operations.
